Nacho Cheese Doritos have a seasoning list that runs on for a while, and that long list is the problem.
What is on the label
I pulled the ingredient list for Nacho Cheese from Open Food Facts (product code 0028400090896). Ingredients are listed from the most to the least by weight.
Corn, vegetable oil (corn, canola, soybean, and/or sunflower oil), corn maltodextrin, and less than 2% of cheddar cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), salt, whey, monosodium glutamate, buttermilk, romano cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), whey protein concentrate, onion powder, potassium salt, corn flour, natural & artificial flavors, dextrose, tomato powder, lactose, spices, artificial color (yellow 6, yellow 5, red 40), lactic acid, citric acid, sugar, garlic powder, skim milk, red and green bell peppers, disodium inosinate, and disodium guanylate contains milk ingredients.
Recipes change, and flavors and package sizes can differ, so read the bag you actually have before you rely on this list.
What matters for your dog
- Onion powder and garlic powder. ASPCA says onion, garlic and chives are Allium vegetables that can cause gastrointestinal irritation and red blood cell damage, which can lead to anemia. It says dogs are at risk depending on the amount they eat.
- Salt. ASPCA says excessive salt can cause increased thirst and urination and, depending on the amount, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures and even death. Size matters: the same snack is a bigger dose for a small dog.
- Dairy. ASPCA says pets don’t have much lactase, the enzyme that digests lactose, so milk-based foods can cause diarrhea or other stomach upset. Whey, cheese, buttermilk and milk powders on a label all count.
About Doritos Nacho Cheese
The Nacho Cheese label includes onion powder and garlic powder, along with two cheeses, whey, buttermilk, lactose, skim milk, monosodium glutamate and spices. ASPCA lists onion and garlic as Allium vegetables that can cause red blood cell damage in dogs, depending on the amount eaten.
The corn chip itself isn’t the issue. The seasoning is, and Doritos are heavily seasoned, so every chip carries some of it.
Cool Ranch has its own, even more dairy-heavy list, and I cover it separately. Other Doritos flavors will differ again.
If your dog already ate some
Write down what it was, how much, when, and your dog’s weight, and keep the package. Then call your vet, ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435, or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661.
Don’t wait for symptoms if the snack has chocolate, xylitol, or a lot of onion or garlic in it. And don’t try to make your dog vomit with salt or salt water. Pet Poison Helpline says that can cause salt poisoning.
Questions people ask
Are Doritos bad for dogs?
The Nacho Cheese label lists onion powder and garlic powder, and ASPCA says those can harm a dog’s red blood cells depending on the amount. I’d keep them out of the treat rotation.
My dog ate one chip. Do I need to call someone?
One chip is a small amount of seasoning, and a bag is a lot. If your dog is small, has health problems, or you’re worried, call your vet for a straight answer.
Are plain corn chips okay?
Plain corn chips like Fritos have a much shorter list: corn, oil and salt. Seasoning is where Doritos get complicated.
