Onion powder is on the label. Skip these.A stray cracker is not the same as a handful, but this is not a snack to hand over on purpose.

Goldfish are the cracker that lives in every diaper bag and cup holder, so plenty of dogs get a shot at them.

What is on the label

I pulled the ingredient list for Goldfish Cheddar from Open Food Facts (product code 0014100085478). Ingredients are listed from the most to the least by weight.

Made with smiles and enriched wheat flour (flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), cheddar cheese ([cultured milk, salt, enzymes], annatto), canola and/or sunflower oils, contains 2 percent or less of: salt, yeast, sugar, autolyzed yeast, baking soda, monocalcium phosphate, paprika, spices, celery, onion powder, contains: wheat, milk,

Recipes change, and flavors and package sizes can differ, so read the bag you actually have before you rely on this list.

What matters for your dog

  • Onion powder. ASPCA says onion, garlic and chives are Allium vegetables that can cause gastrointestinal irritation and red blood cell damage, which can lead to anemia. It says dogs are at risk depending on the amount they eat.
  • Salt. ASPCA says excessive salt can cause increased thirst and urination and, depending on the amount, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures and even death. Size matters: the same snack is a bigger dose for a small dog.
  • Dairy. ASPCA says pets don’t have much lactase, the enzyme that digests lactose, so milk-based foods can cause diarrhea or other stomach upset. Whey, cheese, buttermilk and milk powders on a label all count.

About Goldfish Crackers

The classic Cheddar label lists onion powder near the end, in the “2 percent or less” group, along with salt, yeast, paprika, spices and celery. A small amount at the end of a list is a small amount per cracker. But ASPCA says Allium vegetables, onions included, can damage red blood cells, and that the risk depends on how much a dog eats. That’s why a few crackers and a whole bag are not the same call.

The base is wheat flour with real cheddar and oil, so dairy and salt apply too, same as any cheese cracker.

Goldfish come in a lot of flavors and shapes. I looked at the Cheddar label. Others, like the Flavor Blasted ones, have their own ingredient lists, so read yours.

If your dog already ate some

Write down what it was, how much, when, and your dog’s weight, and keep the package. Then call your vet, ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435, or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661.

Don’t wait for symptoms if the snack has chocolate, xylitol, or a lot of onion or garlic in it. And don’t try to make your dog vomit with salt or salt water. Pet Poison Helpline says that can cause salt poisoning.

Questions people ask

Is the onion in Goldfish enough to hurt a dog?

It’s listed in the small group at the end, so each cracker has little. But ASPCA says the risk depends on the amount a dog eats, so a few crackers and a big bag are different situations. If your dog got into a bag, call your vet.

Are the colored or pretzel Goldfish different?

They can be. Each flavor has its own ingredient list. I checked the Cheddar label only.

Can I give a Goldfish as a treat?

I’d skip it. With onion powder on the label and nothing in it a dog needs, a treat made for dogs is the easier choice.
